What mobile tyre fitting is, and how a callout runs

A mobile tyre change, or mobile tyre replacement, means the fitter and the tyre machine come to the vehicle instead of the vehicle going to a garage.

With mobile tyre fitting, a fitter drives to your home, your workplace, or a private car park where the owner or operator allows the work. The van carries your new tyre and everything needed to fit it.

TN Mobile Tyre Fitting takes its own calls, so no call centre stands between you and the van.

The van carries a tyre changer, a wheel balancer, a compressor, a calibrated torque wrench, a jack and axle stands, a locking wheel nut master set for a nut with no key, a TPMS programming tool for sensors, a valve service kit and a waste tyre carrier for the old tyre.

On the van

  • Tyre changer
  • Wheel balancer
  • Compressor
  • Calibrated torque wrench
  • Jack and axle stands
  • Locking wheel nut master set
  • TPMS programming tool
  • Valve service kit
  • Waste tyre carrier
  1. You call

Ring 01797 334519 and read the size and speed rating off the sidewall. We confirm what we hold for it.

  2. The van comes to you

A fitter loads your tyre and drives to your address at home or work, or to the roadside when a tyre has failed.

  3. The fitting

The fitter removes the old tyre, fits a new valve, fits the new tyre on the rim and balances the wheel on the van, then sets the manufacturer's pressure and torques the nuts. The old tyre leaves with the van.

Say what the vehicle is when you ring, because it decides the tyre, and if the wheels have locking nuts, leave the key in the car for the fitter.

Tyre problems we come out to, and how we deal with each

A fitter repairs a puncture in the tread where the inspection allows; damage to the sidewall means a new tyre.

Tyre problems, whether the car can be driven, repair or replace, and what we do

  • A nail or screw in the tread

Gently to somewhere safe, if it holds air, and leave the nail inDecided with the tyre off the wheel

We inspect it, then repair it to BS AU 159 or fit a new tyre. See what to do about a nail.

  • A slow puncture

Gently, and only if it holds air overnightDepends on where the air escapes

We find the leak at the wheel before any work starts. See the signs of a slow puncture.

  • A blowout

    NoReplace

We bring the replacement to the car.

  • A sidewall bulge or cut

    NoReplace

A bulge means the casing cords have broken, so we fit a new tyre.

  • Kerb or pothole damage

Check it firstDepends on the damage

We inspect the tyre and the rim, because rim damage decides the next step.

  • The pressure warning light

Check the pressures firstNeither until the cause is known

We check each tyre and the sensors, and replace a failed sensor. See what the light means.

  • Tread below 1.6 mm

    Not legallyReplace

We fit a new tyre at your address. See the legal tread limit.

A car or light van tyre with less than 1.6 mm of tread across the central three-quarters, all the way round, is illegal: UK tyre law, section by section.

We do not attend motorways. National Highways advises leaving the vehicle by the nearside door, getting behind the barrier and calling for recovery. Read the National Highways motorway advice.

What a mobile tyre fitting callout includes, and how the price is set

  • Tyre size and specification
  • Tier
  • The job
  • The number of tyres

Four things set the price of every job: the tyre size, the tier, the job and the number of tyres. We confirm the price on the phone before the van sets off.

How each one moves the figure has its own page. A locking wheel nut without its key adds work. An unusual size or a run-flat may be collected from a supplier before the fitter comes out, and we say so on the call rather than at the car.

When a tyre is replaced, the callout covers seven things: the fitter comes to the car, removes the old tyre, fits a new valve, fits the new tyre on the rim, balances the wheel on the van, sets the manufacturer's pressure and takes the old tyre away.

Against a garage, mobile fitting removes the journey, the waiting room and the drive on a damaged tyre. Wheel alignment needs a fixed rig the van does not carry, so a car that still pulls to one side with its pressures right needs a garage. Balancing a wheel on the van is a different job, and the van does it.

Every replacement includes

  • Comes to the car
  • Old tyre removed
  • New valve
  • New tyre fitted
  • Wheel balanced
  • Pressure set
  • Old tyre taken away

Vehicles and tyres we fit

We fit five classes of vehicle across TN1 to TN40, from mobile car tyre fitting to tyres for motorhomes and caravans.

  • Cars

Matched to the size, load and speed rating on the sidewall.

  • Vans and light commercials

Tyres built for the weight a working van carries.

  • 4x4 and SUV

The larger sizes these vehicles run on.

  • Electric vehicles

The size in the handbook and on the door placard.

  • Motorhomes and caravans

Tyres that stand for months and need checking before a trip.

What each part of the sidewall code means shows what to read out on the phone.

The van carries three tiers in the common sizes, and which one suits depends on the vehicle, its mileage and the weather it sees.

  • Budget is the usual choice for lower mileage and for a tyre that has to be on the car today.

  • Mid-range balances price and wear for most everyday driving.

  • Premium suits higher mileage, heavier vehicles or a car that came on one.

Mobile tyre fitting questions

How soon does a fitter arrive?

It depends on where the car is in TN1 to TN40, and we tell you on the call.

Do you repair punctures?

Yes, where the inspection with the tyre off the wheel allows. Damage outside the central three-quarters of the tread takes a new tyre.

Do I need to be there?

Someone does, to give the fitter access and the locking wheel nut key. A colleague, a neighbour or reception can do it, and nobody needs to stay for the whole job.

What does a tyre cost?

It depends on the tyre size, the tier, the job and how many tyres. Call 01797 334519.

Do you attend the motorway?

We do not attend motorways. On the A21, A26, A264 and A267 we come to a car stopped by a failed tyre where it can stand clear of the traffic.

What happens to my old tyre?

The fitter takes it away in the van when the job is done.

Each subject goes further than these answers in Tyre guides: problems, law and sizes.
